International Electricians’ Day is celebrated annually on 10 June. It was first proposed in 1986 by Polish and French professionals to honour André-Marie Ampère, pioneer of electromagnetism. EuropeOn marks this occasion to shine a spotlight on Europe’s 2.7 million electrical professionals, working across 420,000 companies. These professionals are essential to delivering Europe’s energy, resilience and competitiveness objectives.

Electricians’ Day 2026: Skilled hands, resilient Europe

Electricians are at the forefront of deploying clean technologies, modernising buildings, and strengthening Europe’s energy security. They design, install and maintain the systems that keep hospitals operational, public services running, factories productive and households powered. However, despite their critical role, electrical professionals are among the 42 occupations currently facing EU-wide labour shortages. Under the tagline “Skilled hands, resilient Europe”, the 2026 edition of Electricians’ Day focuses on the key role of electricians for Europe’s resilience. The objective is to highlight their essential contributions to energy security and underline the urgent need to attract, train and retain skilled professionals, and to ensure that workforce considerations remain central to EU energy and industrial policy discussions.

CEO of Renewable Grids Initiative

Antonella Battaglini

“Electricians are the heroes of electrification. Like electricity grids, they connect our homes, appliances, and industries – linking small and large energy users alike and turning our energy needs into reality. Let’s celebrate their vital contribution and inspire more young people to join this rewarding and engaging profession.”

Secretary General of Europacable

Dr. Volker Wendt

“Cables are net-zero technologies powering Europe’s green and digital future. The deployment of safe, compliant and resilient electricity and digital infrastructures depends on skilled electrical installers. By installing cables made in Europe for Europe, electrical installers are vital in advancing decarbonisation, resilience, and fire safety across Europe’s buildings and infrastructure.”

Secretary General of European Builders Confederation (EBC)

Fernando Sigchos Jiménez

“Construction and energy are increasingly intertwined, with skilled professionals in these sectors driving Europe’s energy transition. Electricians play a key role through their expertise in energy efficiency, renewables, and heating and cooling systems. Investing in skilled trades and strong vocational training is essential to deliver sustainable buildings and housing!”

Executive Director at Smarten

Michael Villa

“Europe needs electricians to install and maintain the smart decentralised energy resources essential for demand-side flexibility. As smartEn represents the Flexible Demand Management Industry, we stress the need to enhance digital skills—ensuring electricians can install and manage smart assets, driving Europe’s energy transition forward.”

T&D Europe Secretary General

Diederik Peereboom

“Electricians are a key enabler in accelerating the deployment of critical energy infrastructure, from renewables and storage to grid modernisation and cybersecurity. Without the people to install, connect and maintain Europe’s grids, we will not be able to enjoy and benefit from the energy system we need.”

Secretary General of Eurelectric

Kristian Ruby

“Every cable laid and every connection made is a step towards Europe’s independence, resilience and clean energy future. That’s why electricians are the new builders of European security.”

Secretary General at European Union of Electrical Wholesalers (EUEW)

Koen Lauryssen

“Europe relies on electricians to guarantee safe and compliant installations, drive the energy transition, and enable electrification across buildings, industry, and mobility. As frontline practical advisors, they convert technologies into actionable results, supporting grid resilience, energy efficiency, and Europe’s climate ambitions.”

Secretary General of Efficient Buildings Europe

Rémi Collombet

“Electricians are essential to making the EU’s buildings healthier, more comfortable and cheaper to run. Yet the workforce is in short supply, and three to four million construction workers will need upskilling. Investing in skills today is the key answer to Europeans’ demand for better homes and workplaces.”

Director of the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA)

Paul Kenny

“To make our energy system safe, sovereign, and secure, it needs to be electrified – and trained electricians are the lifeblood of that system. For heat pumps alone, the installation rate needs to be tripled by 2030, and for that, manufacturers are already training and recruiting across Europe. Investing in the workforce that electrifies our heating and wider energy system will bring far greater benefits to Europeans than sending investments out of Europe and into the pockets of fossil fuel exporters.”

Managing Director of the European Building Automation and Controls Association (eu.bac)

Gusts Kossovics

“Behind every smart building is a skilled electrician making the magic happen. They’re the people who turn Europe’s energy transition from ambition into reality.”

Secretary General of E-Mobility Europe

Chris Heron

“As Europe accelerates its e-mobility revolution, skilled electricians are the architects of progress, building charging networks and smart grids that will define our future. Their expertise is essential to more sustainable transport on European roads. To succeed, we must invest in training and attract new talent to power this transformation.”

Director General Europe & Chief Operating Officer of the International Copper Association (ICA)

Géraud Servin

“Europe needs electricians to build a resilient, carbon-neutral future. Copper is the backbone of this transition, providing the conductivity and reliability required for modern grids. By combining professional expertise with copper’s performance, we ensure the safe and efficient delivery of clean energy to every European home and industry.”
