After three memorable years as President of EuropeOn, Gérard Constantin, from our Swiss member association EIT.swiss, has come to the end of his mandate. As he leaves our association, we look back at the defining moments of his presidency.
- Rebranding EuropeOn
When he took office, the association was still named AIE. This had been its name since 1954 and was overdue for a rebranding to match the evolution and modernisation of the electrical contracting sector. The name EuropeOn was selected to highlight our association’s European identity, the electrical contractors’ responsibility to “switch users on” by providing high-quality services and advice and for their role in ensuring the smooth and safe integration of electric technologies. This rebranding also came with a new strategy to increase cooperation among members, strengthen our voice and improve our visibility with EU policymakers.
- Raising awareness on the European skills agenda
Mr. Constantin’s presidency also saw an increased focus on skills and workforce issues. This is a central question for electrical contractors across Europe, facing heightened demand due to the energy transition. We have started to work together to raise awareness on this issue with our #Skills4Climate campaign, by engaging with EU Commissioners directly via the Pact for Skills, through our new Skills WG or at the 2021 EuroSkills competition in Graz, which Mr. Constantin personally attended.
- Working and cooperating in Covid times
Unfortunately, his tenure as EuropeOn President was marked by the Covid crisis, disrupting our ways of working. We found a way to still work together, albeit in a digital format, and even increased our exchanges and outreach actions. This crisis has also outlined the importance of our members’ work, as they were in most cases defined as providing “essential” services at national level and could keep working through lockdowns.
Mr. Constantin is convinced that the future of EuropeOn is in good hands with Martin Bailey from ECA, who was vice-president during Mr. Constantin’s tenure and will now lead the association for the coming years. Mr. Bailey will tell us more about his expectations for the next 3 years in our next newsletter’s edition.
To conclude this summary of Mr. Constantin’s presidency, here is a heartfelt message he delivered during our last Annual General Meeting, in our three official languages!
Dear members, dear colleagues, it’s been an honour to be EuropeOn’s President since 2018. I only regret that we did not have more occasions to meet in person.
You are about to start a new exciting journey for the next 3 years at EuropeOn and I am confident that “going back to normal” will offer many opportunities to build on the new cooperation and the new ideas we have developed in the past few years.
As the motto of the European Union says, we are “united in diversity”. I am convinced that one of the major strengths of EuropeOn is to foster dialogue between like-minded people, who work on very similar, electrical, questions. You may be part of bigger associations representing the building sector, or the whole spectrum of small and medium enterprises, but only EuropeOn has the capacity to reflect and defend the specificities of electrical contractors in Brussels.
This unity can go even further, and I firmly believe that much more can be done on the skills agenda if we share more between ourselves and if we better acknowledge each other’s qualification schemes. Only this way can the electrical contracting sector thrive and contribute to a just and consumer-friendly energy transition!

Chers membres, chers collègues, ce fut un honneur d’être le président d’EuropeOn depuis 2018. Je regrette seulement que nous n’ayons pas eu plus d’occasions de nous rencontrer en personne.
Vous êtes sur le point de commencer une nouvelle aventure passionnante pour les 3 prochaines années à EuropeOn et je suis convaincu que le “retour à la normale” offrira de nombreuses opportunités pour avancer grâce à la nouvelle coopération et aux nouvelles idées qui se sont développées au cours des dernières années.
Comme le dit la devise de l’Union européenne, nous sommes “unis dans la diversité”. Je suis convaincu que l’une des principales forces d’EuropeOn est de favoriser le dialogue entre personnes partageant les mêmes idées, qui travaillent sur des questions (électriques) très similaires. Peut-être faites-vous partie d’associations plus importantes représentant le secteur du bâtiment, ou l’ensemble des petites et moyennes entreprises, mais seul EuropeOn a la capacité de porter et de défendre les spécificités des installateurs électriques à Bruxelles.
Cette unité peut aller encore plus loin, je suis fermement convaincu que l’on peut faire beaucoup plus sur l’agenda des compétences si nous partageons davantage entre nous et si nous reconnaissons mieux nos systèmes de qualification respectifs. Ce n’est qu’ainsi que le secteur de l’électricité pourra prospérer et contribuer à une transition énergétique juste et favorable aux consommateurs !
Au moment de vous quitter, je tiens à remercier tous les membres pour leurs contributions, les participants aux groupes de travail pour leur expertise et le secrétariat pour son soutien.

Liebe Mitglieder, liebe Kollegen, es war mir eine Ehre, seit 2018 Präsident von EuropeOn zu sein. Ich bedauere nur, dass wir nicht mehr Gelegenheiten hatten, uns persönlich zu treffen.
Sie stehen kurz davor, ein neues spannendes Programm für die nächsten drei Jahre bei EuropeOn zu starten, und ich bin zuversichtlich, dass die “Rückkehr zur Normalität” viele Möglichkeiten bieten wird, auf der neuen Zusammenarbeit und den neuen Ideen aufzubauen, die in den letzten Jahren entwickelt wurden.
Wie das Motto der Europäischen Union sagt, sind wir “in Vielfalt geeint”. Ich bin überzeugt, dass eine der größten Stärken von EuropeOn darin besteht, den Dialog zwischen Gleichgesinnten zu fördern die an ähnlichen Fragen, die Elektrizität betreffend, arbeiten. Sie mögen größeren Verbänden angehören, die den Bausektor oder das gesamte Spektrum der kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen vertreten, aber nur EuropeOn ist in der Lage, die Besonderheiten der Elektrounternehmen in Brüssel zu reflektieren und zu verteidigen.
Ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass noch viel mehr für die Qualifikationsagenda getan werden kann, wenn wir uns mehr untereinander austauschen und die Qualifizierungssysteme der anderen besser anerkennen. Nur so kann der Sektor der Elektroinstallateure gedeihen und zu einer gerechten und verbraucherfreundlichen Energiewende beitragen!
