EuropeOn has taken over the chairmanship of the Electrification Alliance with Avere, the European Association for Electromobility. Their mandate started at the beginning of January and will last six months. It is the first time EuropeOn has had the chance to hold this position within the organisation.
EuropeOn’s involvement in the leadership of the Alliance makes a lot of sense, as electrical contractors are responsible for integrating electrified technologies together, ultimately bringing electrification to end-users.
The Electrification Alliance advocates electrification as the essential pillar to build a more efficient and greener European energy system and reach the EU’s decarbonisation goals. It was founded in 2017 and consists of 10 associations: Eurelectric, the European Climate Foundation, the European Copper Institute, the European Heat Pump Association, SmartEn, SolarPower Europe, the Renewables Grid Initiative, WindEurope, EuropeOn and Avere.
On 23 October 2023, the Electrification Alliance met with the Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and hosted the ceremony for its “European Electrification Award’’. Simson was the first recipient of the prize, a recognition for her “outstanding contributions to accelerate the direct electrification of Europe’s economy”.
On the same occasion, the organisation unveiled its new manifesto. The document underlines the need for an Electrification Action Plan by the first 100 days of the incoming European Commission’s mandate and for a target of 35% electrification of final energy use across the EU by 2030, a call that is also reflected in EuropeOn’s own manifesto. The Alliance’s manifesto also urges Member States to include electrification in their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and calls for more investments in electricity grids and direct and smart electrification (full manifesto here).
Over the following six months, the Electrification Alliance will continue to advocate for the main instances of its manifesto and ensure that the latter will contribute to shaping the EU’s energy agenda. In particular, the co-chairs will be steering the Alliance so as to present more detailed proposals as to how the Electrification Action Plan can materialise.
