AccelerateEU: Clean electrification at the core of Europe’s security

On 22 April, the European Commission released AccelerateEU, a toolbox to address the ongoing energy crisis. EuropeOn welcomes the document, which points to electrification as the backbone of Europe’s energy strategy ahead of the upcoming Electrification Action Plan.

The toolbox includes a strong focus on scaling up homegrown clean energy. It also rightly stresses the need to phase out fossil fuels and reduce Europe’s dependence on external and often unstable suppliers.

EuropeOn particularly welcomes the emphasis on strengthening Europe’s energy security and resilience through clean technologies. Electrical contractors play a central role in this transition, installing and maintaining electrical installations and turning policy ambition into reality. From building renovation to renewable integration and smart technologies, they ensure the energy transition is delivered on the ground, building a more resilient Europe.

A clear signal ahead of the Electrification Action Plan

This publication follows the recent Citizens Energy Package and marks another step towards the Electrification Action Plan, expected in the coming month, alongside the revision of the EU Energy Framework.

The upcoming Electrification Action Plan will be a key opportunity to build on this momentum by ensuring that policy frameworks actively support electrification. This includes making the 2026 revision of the Primary Energy Factor (PEF) a true enabler for electrification, committing to clear electrification targets such as the 32% KPI by 2030, maintaining regulatory stability, and addressing labour shortages by supporting a skilled workforce.
