Every year on 10 June, the electrical sector celebrates International Electricians’ Day. First proposed in 1986 by Polish and French electrical professionals, this initiative was created to honour André-Marie Ampère, one of the pioneers of electromagnetism.
Forty years after its first edition, Electricians’ Day is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Europe’s 2.7 million electrical professionals working across more than 420,000 companies. These skilled professionals are essential to advancing electrification and supporting a more resilient and energy-independent Europe.
Skilled hands, resilient Europe
As this year’s tagline, “Skilled hands, resilient Europe”, suggests, EuropeOn is focusing on the crucial role electricians play in strengthening Europe’s resilience in an increasingly uncertain context.
Electricians are at the forefront of deploying clean technologies, modernising buildings, and strengthening Europe’s energy security. They design, install, and maintain the systems that keep hospitals operational, public services running, factories productive, and households powered. In times of crisis, they are also the qualified professionals ensuring continuity, restoring systems, and helping critical infrastructure remain functional.
Despite their strategic importance, electrical professionals are among the occupations currently facing EU-wide labour shortages. Ensuring Europe has enough qualified electricians will therefore be essential not only for the energy transition, but also for Europe’s broader security and preparedness ambitions.
Electrical careers are stable yet diverse, offering multiple growth opportunities. Many professionals go from apprentice to fully trained electrician, before starting and growing their own businesses. Others may prefer to develop within larger companies while continuing to upskill and learn about new technologies.
Celebrate Electricians’ Day with EuropeOn on 10 June
To mark the occasion, EuropeOn is organising a networking event in Brussels, bringing together representatives from across the electrical and construction sectors to spend an evening together and celebrate electricians in a relaxed atmosphere.
We are pleased to announce the participation of French Member of the European Parliament Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, who will deliver a keynote speech and join discussions on electrification, resilience, and skills. The evening will also feature Euroskills champion John Eggebeen, who will share his experience as a young electrician representing the excellence and future of the sector.
In short, the event will provide an opportunity to celebrate Electricians’ Day together and connect with colleagues and partners from across the sector.
