Every solar panel connected, every heat pump installed, every electric vehicle charger put into service starts with the work of a skilled electrician. As Europe accelerates its energy transition, the role of electricians has never been more important. They are the professionals turning climate and energy ambitions into reality while helping to build a more resilient, competitive and electrified Europe.
Every year on 10 June, the electrical sector celebrates International Electricians’ Day. Under the tagline the “Skilled hands, resilient Europe“, EuropeOn marked this occasion as an opportunity to highlight the essential role electricians play in strengthening Europe’s resilience in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical and energy landscape. Electricians design, install and maintain the systems that keep hospitals operational, public services running, factories productive and households powered. In times of crisis, they help restore essential services, repair damaged infrastructure and ensure critical installations remain operational. As Europe continues to electrify its economy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, their expertise is becoming increasingly strategic.
Celebrating electricians in Brussels
To mark International Electricians’ Day, EuropeOn organised a celebration in Brussels, bringing together representatives from the energy and construction sectors, as well as policymakers, to recognise the contribution electricians make to Europe’s future. The event featured a video message from European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu, who highlighted the importance of skills and recognised the contribution electricians make to Europe’s green and digital transitions.
Participants also heard from John Eggebeen, the EuroSkills Herning 2025 champion in Electrical Installations, who travelled from Zeeland to share his experience as a young electrician. His testimony showcased the wide range of opportunities the profession offers and highlighted the importance of inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals.
MEP Thomas Pellerin-Carlin delivered a keynote speech, reminding participants that electricians are the skilled professionals working behind the scenes to keep Europe’s homes, businesses and infrastructure running. From maintaining power systems to supporting the deployment of clean technologies, they are essential to Europe’s resilience and competitiveness.
Skilled hands across Europe
International Electricians’ Day was not only celebrated in Brussels. Across Europe, national associations organised events, published articles, shared videos and launched social media campaigns to raise awareness of the profession and celebrate the people behind Europe’s electrification. From open days and conferences to awareness campaigns and video messages, it was inspiring to see so many organisations across the sector rally around a shared message: recognising the skilled hands powering a resilient Europe.
The campaign also received support from several European stakeholders and policymakers. Among them, MEP Bruno Tobback shared a dedicated video message on his social media channels, recognising the essential contribution electricians make to Europe’s future and helping to raise further awareness of the profession.
EuropeOn would like to thank all its members, partners and supporters who contributed to this year’s celebration. June 10th, we celebrated electricians. Today, and every day, we continue to recognise the skilled hands powering Europe’s future.
